What happens when you have two MX records
Dual MX records are used as a backup, meaning that if a domain has more than one MX record, a host will only attempt to deliver email for that domain to one MX at a time.
How do I add a second MX record
Configure Secondary MX Server for External Mail Servers
- Use the username and password provided to log into WHM.
- Go to DNS Functions > Edit DNS Zone and choose your domain name.
- Locate the 'A' record for the 'mail' name, and change the IP address to the IP of the domain's mail server.
How do multiple MX records work
MX Preferences The lowest preference is the MX with the highest priority, i.e. the one that a sending mail server should try first. Youll notice that there are multiple MX records, each with a different preference value.
Can you have two MX records with the same priority
The server with the higher preference number will only be contacted if the servers with lower preference number are unavailable (this is typically used for backup mail servers), and two MX records with the same priority will share the workload.
Can you have two A records
A records can be used for a variety of purposes, including the use of multiple A records for the same domain to provide redundancy and fallbacks and the ability for multiple names to point to the same IP address, each with its own A record pointing to that IP address.
How many MX records do I need
Keep in mind that they must be from the same provider; if they are from different providers, your email services will not function. You can add as many MX records as you need to your domains DNS Zone.
Why do different companies have different priority for MX record
A typical MX record implementation would have 2 MX records, with varying levels of priority. MX records have a “Priority” field in addition to standard DNS record fields like Name, TTL (time to live), Type, and Value. The lower the value in the Priority field, the higher the priority.
Can you have multiple SPF records for a domain
The general rule is that using multiple SPF records will result in the SPF authentication failing. A domain name MUST NOT have multiple records that would cause an authorization check to choose more than one record.
Can one domain have two email providers
Users with email addresses in the same domain can receive emails at two different email service providers thanks to a process known as split domain routing (SDR).
Can I have two mail servers with same domain
Of course, you can have as many MX records (and mail servers) as you want for a domain, and you can even establish priorities between them. For instance, the MX records of the domain gmail.com are as follows: 5 Sept 2014
What are my MX records
When sending emails to an address at the domain for which the records are for, MX records, also referred to as Mail Exchanger records, are used to specify which server to use.
What is priority in MX record
If there are multiple addresses with the same priority, it simply connects to one at random. You can also change your MX records from the existing one if you deem it necessary. The priority is used to determine which MX server to connect to first, in order to get to your inbox.
What is MX record DNS
The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP, the standard protocol for all email) is used to route email messages, and an MX record in DNS tells a mail server where to send emails. Like CNAME records, an MX record must always point to another domain.
How does MX priority work
MX Priority: The MX record with the smallest first choice number has the highest precedence and is the first server to be tried when a remote client performs an MX lookup for the domain name.29 September 2015
What is split domain routing
With the help of split domain routing (SDR), you can distribute a single domains mailboxes between our system and an external system so that they interact as if they were in the same environment.
Can domain have 2 MX records
Its not possible to let two completely different services both handle your mail for the same domain, and IMHO it doesnt make any sense to even try. You can set up more than one MX server for a given domain, but this is purely a backup function to specify another server to receive mail when one server goes down.
